Directions: Add 5 - 10 drops to 1/4 cup of warm water (try to make this as warm as your pet will tolerate, without being uncomfortably hot). Using clean cotton swab apply gentle pressure as a hot compress directly over the anal opening. Apply once daily in the case of compacted or blocked anal glands. Although any pet may be affected, impacted and infected anal glands are more common in dogs than in cats and small breeds like Chihuahuas and Pomeranians are particularly prone to these difficulties.

• Your pet may scoot across the floor on his rear end or rub up against furniture etc.

• Your pet is licking his around his anus a lot

• The anal area is swollen or producing pus or discharge

• Pain when anything touches your pet's rear end or when having a bowel movement.

Any sign of an abscess or infection should lead you to consult your pet’s vet. Redness and swelling in the anal area, excessive “scooting”, pus and discharge or indications of pain all point to an infection. The vet will manually drain the gland/s- possibly with an anesthetic - and apply antibiotics or prescribe them orally. If the problem is not managed effectively and becomes chronic, surgery to remove the glands altogether may become necessary.

• Ensure that your dog is not overweight. Excess weight can lead to increased problems with the anal glands so keep your dog lean and trim with a wholesome, balanced diet and regular exercise.

• Increase fiber intake. A high intake of fresh, raw vegetables and natural fibers will boost the fiber in your pet’s diet increasing stool bulk and thereby promoting natural emptying of the anal glands during bowel movements. Avoid highly processed foods like white bread and ensure that your pet has access to plenty of fresh, clean water.

• Allow your pet regular exercise. Apart from being good for all-round health, regular exercise will strengthen the muscles in the rectum and abdomen allowing increased internal pressure on the anal glands, promoting natural emptying. Regular exercise will also promote regular bowel movements.
